Richard Afseth

Richard Afseth is a native of Saskatoon. He attended Buena Vista School and Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. He trained and worked as an electrician until joining his brothers in the construction business in 1974. In 1995, he formed his own company.
Richard is married with 2 grown children, who both live in Saskatoon and he has 2 grandchildren who light up his life. Rich has always loved animals and as a ‘city-farmer’ had many opportunities to have lots of ‘pets’.
Rich’s interests and hobbies include - being at Emma Lake (where he serves on the Environmental Committee), snowmobiling, boating, skiing, photography and his recent passion, carving. He serves on the Erindale Village Condo Board, works with the Saskatchewan branch of the Canadian Disabled Skiing, is a member of the Search & Rescue Team in Lakeland and volunteers at Saskatoon City Hospital and the Festival of Trees. He holds memberships in and is a past-board member of the Friends of the Forestry Farm House and the Saskatchewan Perennial Society.
Since retiring, over 7 years ago, Richard got the ‘traveling bug’. His first venture was a delightful tour to Churchill, MB hosted by Leslie Tuchek and the U of S Centre of Continuing and Distance Education to see polar bears. The second, was again hosted by Leslie, a wonderful tour to Newfoundland. In August ‘07 Richard and his wife Isobel (who is also a WRSOS hotline volunteer) undertook a 6 week camping adventure to Alaska and the Yukon.
Through the encouragement of Leslie Tuchek, Richard joined the Saskatoon Nature Society and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan, rekindling an active interest in nature.

Last spring, Richard attended the hotline training for WRSOS and since that time he has manned the hotline on a weekly basis (except during his trip to Alaska/Yukon). He has taken part in bird-banding at Beaver Creek and helped with a pelican rescue at Diefenbaker Lake. Richard plans to attend the Wildlife Rehabilitator course in March.
