I was born in London, Ontario. As my mom was a nurse who also loved animals, we ended up with all the local injured wildlife. This included a skunk, a raccoon, a squirrel and Nelson the one-eyed crow. We would take the baby wild birds on vacation with us wherever we went.
I decided early on (around age 5) that I wanted to be a vet. I eventually made it and graduated vet school in 1998. I worked with exotics and dogs and cats for two years in Toronto. I planned to do a residency but had no concrete leads. I got very lucky when I met Colette Wheler at a conference in New Orleans.
Before I knew it, I was experiencing my first Saskatchewan winter! I have fallen in love with Saskatoon. I became an Assistant Professor in Zoo, Exotic and Wildlife Medicine in 2003 at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).
When Colette left the WCVM in 2002, I inherited Jan Shadick as the local wildlife rehabilitator. One of the perks of my job is being able to work with wildlife. The WCVM offers a full range of medical care
